Hats off to the Boothbay Area YMCA Trustees, current and past members, for never emphasizing what the “Heart of the Region” has to offer. And to the people of this region and across the country, who have supported the changes that have taken place over the many years that the facility has been erected on Townsend Avenue.

I’m so old, I remember the gym that was at the east end of the basketball court. It was a place where then-general manager Art Warner taught classes on the trampoline, hitting horse, and other equipment.

I’m so old, I remember my legs and feet sore from playing hoops for hours on the tiled basketball court before the wooden court was set up.

And I’m so old, I remember the ping pong ball container that was on the corner of the reception (located right at the front door) where you could pay a quarter to get a ball and sign a few paddles play a game.

Dozens and dozens of changes have been made to the Y over the years to benefit the community: two swimming pools, weight rooms, exercise rooms, racquetball / squash courts, tennis court and track. raised… and much more.

The YMCA is currently changing again with “a remodeling of health and wellness areas, expansion of community spaces, modernization of the building’s electrical and mechanical systems for greater energy efficiency, (and) improvements to the parking lot, installation of a new HVAC systems to improve air quality. UC Sustainability’s Bike Kitchen is a service center where any student, staff, or faculty can learn about bicycle repair and maintenance.




Each new year, once the ball has fallen and the champagne bottles have been burst, many find themselves with New Year’s resolutions to break. Whether you’re looking to be more active or spend more time volunteering, it can be difficult to stick to your resolve beyond the first two weeks of the year. However, there are many resolutions that can be maintained and achieved using the many resources that the University of Cincinnati (UC) offers its students.

Be active

Those looking to be more physically active in 2022 have many options on campus to help them achieve their goals. The Campus Recreation Center (CRC) offers 212,000 square feet of space to be active in the New Year and is free to all full-time students in the upscale neighborhoods of campus. In addition to the standard cardio and strength training equipment, CRC also offers fitness classes, personal training, racquetball, water sports, and indoor rock climbing. CRC also offers certifications and workshops for those who wish to continue pursuing their passion for fitness as one of their resolutions.

Live more sustainably

As society continues to run out of time to take action against the most serious effects of climate change, many people are looking to make lifestyle changes to live more sustainably. Programs like UC Bike Kitchen and Bearcat Bike Kitchen can help students reduce the carbon consumption in their lives. Both of these programs are managed by the UC Office of Sustainability and aim to promote cycling culture on campus and allow students to borrow a bicycle to get around town or can help students repair their personal bikes. The university also has several student organizations dedicated to environmental protection, such as Restore Our Mother Earth (ROME), Leaders for Environment Awareness Protection (LEAP) and Sustainable Industrial Design Initiative.

CLEARFIELD – Clearfield YMCA CEO Don Herres gave some tips for people trying to keep their New Years Resolutions to lose weight and get in shape.

Before starting an exercise program, you should check with your healthcare professional how much exercise it is safe for you to do, Herres said.

One of the best exercises for someone who is just starting out is walking, said Herres. You don’t need to be a member of a fitness club or an expensive treadmill to take a walk, and when the weather is bad, you can walk to department stores and malls, according to Herres.

For many people, having a friend to exercise with is also beneficial. Having someone to exercise with often makes a person more likely to do the activity and stick with it for longer.

Choosing a sport or activity that you like to practice is also a good idea.

“If you like activity, it won’t even look like exercise,” Herres said.

Racket sports such as tennis, racquetball, and pickle ball are a good choice for fitness because they work multiple muscle groups, improve balance and hand-eye coordination, strengthen the heart and lungs, and are very strong. fun, said Herres. These are also activities that can be enjoyed at any age, said Herres.

And Herres said it’s never too late to start a new sport.

Also, if someone plays a sport they love, not only are they enjoying it, but people are often more motivated to exercise outside of sport to improve their game.

Strength training is also helpful because muscle tissue burns more calories, so adding muscle tissue increases metabolism, allowing them to burn more calories throughout the day, Herres said.

One can use strength-training equipment like free weights or weight machines or one can do strength-training exercises such as push-ups, crunches and squats from the comfort of his own home, Herres said.

“The important thing is to do something,” Herres said.

Herres also said it’s important to set realistic goals and then break them down into small steps. Start slowly and increase your exercise.

For example, at first, a realistic goal would be to walk three days a week. And after doing this for a while, one can increase the number of days.

“There will be setbacks,” Herres said. “But when these setbacks do occur, it’s important not to give up completely.”

It is also important to be flexible in your schedule. Often times, things turn up and you don’t have an hour to exercise.

But he said, we can use the time they have wisely.

Eventually, if you stick to it, exercise becomes a habit and part of the usual routine, Herres said.

To lose weight, a good rule of thumb is to lose one pound a person should burn 3,500 calories. So if you can cut your calories by 250 calories and exercise for 250 calories, that’s 500 calories per day or one pound per week. So if a person aims to lose 20 pounds, it will take around 20 weeks.

In most private or public workplaces, the boss is usually the highest paid employee. There are a few notable exceptions, such as sometimes superiors choose stock options or a percentage of profits. In Idaho, it is not the governor who is the highest paid employee, but someone who has worked for just over a year.

Idaho Press recently shared a report that breaks down the salaries of the state’s most expensive employees. Thanks to the legwork of Betsy Russell and Idaho State Comptroller Brandon Wolf, you can see everyone’s salary here. A glance at the report shows academics are a very lucrative career in Idaho. Brad Little’s salary is close to $ 140,000, which we all agree is a great annual salary. However, according to Wolf and Russell, more than four hundred state employees make more money than the governor.

EAST LANSING — When Norm Houtekier moved to the Detroit area about five years ago, he couldn’t find anyone to play racquetball with.

Instead, everyone was playing pickleball, a game similar to tennis but with a wooden paddle and a smaller court. Houtekier joined and at 89, the East Lansing resident still plays today.

“It’s good socially, it’s good exercise and it’s not that strenuous,” he said.

And it’s getting more and more popular, which is why he thinks it’s a great idea that the nonprofit Patriarche Park Pickleball is raising money to help bring 10 new pickleball courts to Patriarche Park in East Lansing.

Sports Park Plan Campaign

The nonprofit, founded in 2021, is raising funds through an online crowdfunding campaign Patronicity which launched on Friday. By Thursday morning, he had raised $21,050. If it raises $50,000 by Feb. 28, the Michigan Economic Development Corp. will match it with a grant of $50,000.
