Collins leads the game 1-0 over Vekic. She defeated Vekic in three sets at the 2018 Miami Open.
On Saturday, qualifier Donna Vekic will advance to the 2022 San Diego Open semifinals against world No. 19 Danielle Collins.
Martina Trevisan, who made it to the 2022 French Open semi-finals, and world number 10 Caroline Garcia were the opponents for Collins’ first two wins. She faced fourth player Paula Badosa in the quarter-finals.
In the first set, neither player was able to hold their lead for very long, which led to a lot of changing dynamics. Three times Collins had break advantage, but Badosa fought back to return serve each time. In the eleventh game, a break gave the Spaniard a 6-5 lead, but she couldn’t win the set as she lost serve in the next game. Collins made the vital break and increased his lead with a serve catch to go up 5-3 in the eighth game of the set. She ran into a small problem as the match drew to a close, but still won 7-6(5), 6-4 after fending off a few break points.
Donna Vekic qualified for the main draw of this competition by winning a few matches in the qualifying rounds. Before upsetting former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova, she had previously beaten world No. 7 Maria Sakkari. She could not qualify for the semi-finals after losing to Aryna Sabalenka, the fifth player in the world.
Towards the end of the first set, Vekic broke his opponent’s serve twice to win. With three successive service breaks to start the second set, the Croatian took the lead and eventually won 2-1. By returning to serve later in the set, Sabalenka was able to force a tie-break. A decisive match was essential since the Belarusian won the tie-break. Vekic demonstrated his dominance in the deciding set winning five straight to win 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1.
Collins needs to serve more effectively against the Croatian. She committed 10 double faults in her quarter-final match against Badosa. His wobbly service was the only imperfection, otherwise everything was perfect. When she simply demolished it with her backhand, the Spaniard even threw her racket in annoyance.
Vekic was certainly capable of winning his previous game, but a small performance misfire cost him. She did well to bounce back quickly, but this mistake could hurt the American. Collins should end her run at this point, but the Croatian has been playing exceptional tennis all week.
