How To Play Racquetball | MaWabashValley.com

What is racquetball?

Racquetball is almost 70 years old and is one of the most fun, competitive and challenging sports in the world. It is a two-player game played with a racket and a hollow rubber ball on an outdoor or indoor court. What sets it apart from similar sports like squash and tennis is that in racquetball, there is no net. Instead, players score points using the ground, ceiling, and walls of the pitch through a relatively simple set of rules, strategies, and techniques.

What you need to know to play racquetball

Layout of the racquetball court

Racquetball courts are rectangular and consist of four enclosed walls. The floor of the court has a central place called service box. The top line is called the short line, the middle line is called the service line, and the bottom line is called the receiving line.

Racquetball game, shots and fouls

The game starts between the two solid lines in the middle of the field, called the service zone. To serve the ball, bounce the ball once, then hit it with your racquet toward the front wall.

The ball must touch the front wall and completely clear the service court for a rally to begin. If he does not touch the wall or falls below the service box during the serve, it is considered a foul. If two service faults occur in a row, the other player may serve instead.

As soon as the ball leaves the service area, the rally begins. Players can hit the ball from any wall as long as the ball hits the front wall before hitting the ground. If the ball bounces more than once on the ground, the receiving player loses the rally. However, if a server loses the rally, no points are awarded. In this case, the other player simply serves the next one.

Conversely, if the server wins the exchange, he gets a point and is used to start the next exchange.

Racquetball Scores and Winning Strategies

A racquetball match consists of three games. The first and second games are played in 15 points. The third, however, is only played at 11 points. Whoever wins at least two of the three matches wins the match overall.

A great way to earn points in racquetball is to act like you’re about to hit the ball hard, but hit it soft at the last minute. Another technique is to hit the ball at an angle so that it ricochets off two walls. This way he comes back at an angle your opponent didn’t expect, causing him to lose the rally.

As you gain experience, you’ll learn to direct the ball down the wall so it hits the ground before your opponent can reach it.

What do you need to play racquetball?

Unlike sports like golf, getting started with racquetball is quick, easy and affordable. All you need is a racquetball racquet and a ball, although there are other things you might want as well.

  • Racquetball: It is a small hollow rubber ball designed for play.
  • Racket: A good racquetball racquet has a safety strap that can be slipped over the wrist to ensure it doesn’t come loose while you play.
  • Protective glasses: They usually come in different styles. However, beginners should buy a pair with a strap to keep them tight.
  • Glove: Many players wear a racquetball glove during play. It is worn on the hand in which you hold the racquet. This prevents the racket from slipping in your hand and helps prevent calluses on your skin.
  • Racket cover: A racquet cover protects your racquet to keep it in good condition so it lasts longer.
