James City County Police Department approves salary and benefits increase

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. – The James City County Police Department has approved an increase in wages and benefits.

On September 13, 2022, the JCC Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a measure to increase the salaries of all current executives as well as the starting salary of new hires from $47,175 to $50,700.

They also endorsed the following benefits:

  • A $5,000 signing bonus for new recruits,
  • + $1,500 salary increase for an associate degree (or 60 credit hours earned at an accredited college/university) or
  • + $3,000 for a bachelor’s degree for recruits and current officers,
  • an additional $3,251/year for night shift officers.

Current officers will receive a 5% salary increase. They will also receive an adjustment in the career advancement program and a referral bonus of $2,000 for any officer recruited.

The department provided us with the following brief summary of criteria for each position, along with salary ranges and an overview of benefits:

  • Police Officer I [Recruit or Certified] – ($50,700 or more DOQ) Entry-level law enforcement and protective position. The job is to maintain the public peace, protect life, enforce laws and conduct limited investigations.
  • Police Officer II – ($52,728 or higher DOQ; max range $76,411) Expected to perform law enforcement and protective work to maintain public peace, protect life, enforce laws, and conduct limited investigations. Requires two years of service as a Police Officer I with James City County or two years of equivalent experience as determined by the department, certification as an intoxicyzer and radar operator, maintain training requirements of the department with regards to the ASP/tactical baton, meet multiple department staff requirements and have 40 hours of specialized training acceptable to the department.
  • Senior Police Officer (PO3) – ($54,837 – $82,044) Expected to perform specialized and involved duties, administrative duties and/or assist in the investigation of complex incidents or criminal acts. Must meet Police Officer II requirements, complete an additional 40 hours of specialty training acceptable to the department; have a minimum of three years of experience as a sworn constable in James City County with one year of service as a police officer II from the date of most recent hire: or two years of equivalent experience as determined by the department + one year of service as a Police Officer II with the James City County Police Department from most recent date of hire.
  • Senior Police Officer (PO4) – ($57,030 – $88,100) An individual in this position is expected to perform specialized and involved duties, administrative duties and/or assist in the investigation of complex incidents or criminal acts. Requires successful completion of all certifications required of a senior police officer; an associate degree or 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university; complete an additional 80 hours of specialized training acceptable to the department (160 hours in total); have passed a written exam. Must have at least five years of experience in James City County with two years of experience as a senior police officer as of most recent date of hire; or three years of equivalent experience as determined by the department + two years of service as a senior police officer with the James City County Police Department from the most recent date of hire.
