Ozarks Regional YMCA seeks to sell downtown Springfield property

The Ozarks Regional YMCA is seeking to sell the building that houses the G. Pearson Neighborhood YMCA, located at 417 S. Jefferson Avenue in downtown Springfield.

The 62,000 square foot space is for sale at $4.5 million, according to Gerald Zamora of Real Estate Zamorawith whom ORYMCA works throughout the process.

Zamora told The News-Leader on Thursday that ORYMCA was looking for a place to relocate, but that decision has not been finalized.

A spokesperson for ORYMCA did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on the report.

Springfield television station KOLR10 reported that the YMCA sent a letter to members in downtown Springfield explaining that the decision to sell the building was due to declining member usage and rising building maintenance costs.

Serving the community for over 100 years

According to Springfield-Greene County Library Districtthe building that houses the current downtown YMCA was built in 1913 after the original was destroyed by fire in 1911. This gymnasium, which cost $100,000 to construct, opened to the public in September 1913.

In 1982, the YMCA became the Springfield Family Y, after the Young Men’s Christian Association and the Young Women’s Christian Association merged. Five years later, the building was renamed the G. Pearson Ward YMCA after Springfield broadcast director Granville Pearson Ward.

Ward – who managed KKTS-AM and FM, KTTS-TV and KOLR-TV – has been involved with ORYMCA for more than 50 years, according to previous News-Leader report. He was a member when he first moved to Springfield in 1915 from Baltimore and later a board member.

The building was then renovated in 1996 for the first time since 1913.

Today, the G. Pearson Ward YMCA has a gym, aerobics center, fitness center, handball and racquetball courts, and an indoor running track.
