Face to face Tommy Paul against Adrian Mannarino
Paul and Mannarino have never faced each other in a competitive match before this one.
Paul tames Verdasco in Opener
With back-to-back quarter-final appearances at Queen’s Club competition and Eastbourne International, Paul had entered Wimbledon this year with some form and practice.
And going up against struggling veteran Fernando Verdasco gave him a good chance to prepare for the bigger challenges ahead.
Paul, who had never reached the main draw at Wimbledon before, recorded a 6-1, 6-2, 7-6(4) victory over Verdasco, needing just an hour and 45 minutes to get there.
Braving six aces from his opponent’s racket, Paul won 75% of his own service points and broke Verdasco six times in the encounter, while only losing his own serve twice – both in the third set.
The American will now hope to offer something similar to his next opponent who needed to huff and puff to win against Max Purcell, despite being a 3/10 favorite heading into the encounter.
Mannarino manages to get away
Two sets to love in the first round, Mannarino looked to have lived up to his favorite heavy tag against Purcell, but in the end it didn’t turn out to be a straight win for the Frenchman from afar.
The world number 86 dropped the next two sets before converting his only match point in game 10 of the final set to take the win.
Mannarino was on the court for just under four hours and won 6-3, 7-6(0), 4-6, 4-6, 6-4, building on his Open semi-final of Rosmalen on grass earlier this month. .
The Frenchman also has a good overall record on grass – in fact, some of his best performances have come after winning 56 and losing 40 of his matches on grass ahead of Wimbledon this year.
Can he give Paul a bit of a hard time?
Paul v Mannarino Prediction and Tip
While Paul is ranked 32nd in the world to 86th for his opponent, the odds of winning don’t reflect such a wide chasm and it depends on Mannarino’s overall experience on grass. Paul, at 4/6, looks a tempting punt for that.
