Face to face between Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula

There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Swiatek leads 2-1.

They first met at the 2019 Washington Open as Swiatek was just finding his feet and Pegula won that encounter to advance to the quarter-finals.

Their two most recent encounters were earlier this year – in Miami and Roland Garros – and Swiatek won both sets in a row.

Swiatek survives first-set debacle against Niemeier

Jule Niemeier is ranked 108th in the world and had started his fourth round match against top seed Swiatek at huge but expected odds of 9/2 to register a shock victory.

When she broke Swiatek in the very first game of the match, it was probably because of the world number one’s early nervousness. Shortly after, however, Swiatek struggled to come back and was then broken a second time to give up the set.

And when Niemeier scalped another break early in the second set, things looked to have gone awry for Swiatek.

Swiatek managed to come back from there, however, pulling out immediately for his first break of the match and then making three more breaks of serve in the same set. In the process, Swiatek dropped his serve twice more,

The third set was much easier for the world number one who found her serving rhythm, dropping just five points on serve and earning a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over Niemeier.

Swiatek is 2/5 (with bet365) to reach the semi-final but she will be a little worried about these sudden drops in form.

Pegula beats Petra to reach the last eight

Pegula was a marginal 9/11 favorite for her fourth-round match against Petra Kvitova, but the manner in which she defeated her opponent would send a warning signal to her next opponent.

The American found a way to crush two-time Wimbledon winner Kivtova 6-3, 6-2 in just 69 minutes to enter her fourth Grand Slam quarter-final.

Although she faced 18 winners with the Kvitova racquet, it was Pegula’s ability to keep the ball in play that helped her out, with the Czech also committing 24 unforced errors. Pegula may have to do a lot more than that against Swiatek, certainly hitting more winners than the seven she managed all game.

The win comes after Pegula didn’t face too much opposition in her first three rounds, with only Yue Yuvan managing to take a set from her.

Can she now test the world number one despite a 2/1 start (with bet365) to win this?

Swiatek v Pegula Prediction and Tip

While Swiatek may not be giving the same kind of unbeatable impression she did earlier this year, she’s still a handful and should be our pick to carve out a win over Pegula. Maybe even a right-hander if Pegula doesn’t get off to a good start.
